What Is Amazonite? A Name That's Actually a Historical Mistake
Amazonite is a blue-green variety of microcline, a type of potassium feldspar. Its name suggests a connection to the Amazon River region in South America — but that connection appears to be a genuine historical mistake.
The Naming Error
No confirmed deposit of amazonite has ever actually been documented in the Amazon basin. The most widely accepted explanation is that early specimens were confused with a different green stone genuinely found in that region (possibly a form of jade or another green mineral), and the amazonite name simply stuck to the wrong material as it spread through European mineral trade — meaning one of the most recognizable gemstone names in common use is, strictly speaking, a mislabel that was never corrected.
What Causes the Color
Amazonite's blue-green color comes from a combination of lead and water content within the feldspar's structure, along with some structural characteristics related to how the mineral's internal components are arranged — a color mechanism distinct from the exsolution layering that produces optical effects in related feldspars like moonstone and labradorite, even though all three belong to the same broader mineral family.
Distinguishing Genuine Material
Amazonite sometimes shows fine white to grey streaking or a subtle grid-like pattern under close inspection, a texture related to its feldspar twinning structure — genuine material typically shows this rather than perfectly uniform color throughout.
Where It's Mined
Colorado in the United States (Pikes Peak region) and Russia are historically significant sources; Madagascar and Brazil are other major current producers.
