What Is Topaz? Almost All Blue Topaz Has Been Irradiated
Topaz is an aluminum silicate mineral containing fluorine and hydroxyl, and colorless topaz is by far the most common natural form. The vivid blue topaz seen everywhere in jewelry is, in the overwhelming majority of cases, colorless topaz that's been artificially irradiated and then heat-treated.
How Blue Topaz Is Actually Made
Naturally occurring blue topaz exists, but it's extremely rare and typically very pale. To meet demand for saturated blue material, colorless topaz is irradiated — commonly using a nuclear reactor, a linear accelerator, or a cobalt-60 source — which alters the crystal's structure to produce color, followed by heat treatment to refine the exact shade (ranging from pale "sky blue" to deeper "Swiss" and "London" blue depending on treatment intensity). Treated material is held for a period afterward to allow residual radioactivity to decay to safe levels before sale, a standard and regulated part of the process.
Imperial Topaz
The naturally rare and genuinely prized variety is imperial topaz, showing natural orange to pinkish-orange color from chromium, historically associated with Russia's Ural Mountains (where the name originated under Tsarist patronage) and today primarily sourced from Ouro Preto, Brazil.
A Practical Durability Note
Despite ranking 8 on the Mohs hardness scale — hard enough to resist scratching in daily wear — topaz has perfect cleavage in one direction, meaning a sharp knock at the right angle can cause it to split cleanly rather than just chip, a real consideration for ring settings especially.
Where It's Mined
Brazil is the largest source of topaz overall, including the material most commonly irradiated into blue topaz; Nigeria, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are other significant sources.
